About Run For Wheels: Born under the GWF Partnership Program, "Run For Wheels" was created as a means to improve the education in rural communities in Ghana by raising money for the purchase of school buses. Often taken for granted in America, school buses are an essential aspect to adequate education, as they offer both students and schools a level of flexibility, opportunity, and safety that would otherwise be nonexistent. Here is why school buses are needed: Safety: Since many students are unable to afford the cost of transportation, they must walk long distances, making their trips to and from school a safety hazard. In Ghana, roads are narrow and sidewalks are nowhere. In January of 2006 a first grade girl was hospitalized after being struck by a truck on her way to Wisdom Academy. Even more recently, a new paved road has been finished in the same village, resulting in three more accidents involving children walking to school. Buses are now needed urgently. |
||
Opportunity: In Ghana, village schools are often few and far between, while adequate village schools are even scarcer. By providing school buses, more children will be able to attend school and others, able to attend the schools of their choice. Flexibility: Buses will also provide free transportation for students to and from school as well as give them opportunities for field trips and school sporting events that would otherwise not be possible. Who should sign up? This program is designed to allow the GWF community to take a more active role in the fundraising process. It requires those involved to do all of the "leg-work." This program is perfect for those with a passion for running and a desire to make a difference to others. We believe you will find this program truly rewarding. |

GWF purchased our first school bus for Wisdom Academy in the winter of 2007. Within one semester, enrollment increased by over 20% and a Computer Club was established, bringing student to a nearby Internet Cafe. |

Here are the steps to becoming involved in GWF's Run For Wheels Program: |
Here are some links to help you find a race near you: |
|
1.) Sign up for an unaffiliated race that you would like to be involved in. The web sites to the left both offer search engines so you can browse marathons and other races not only in the U.S., but all over the world. 2.) Sign up with GWF. To complete this step you will need proof of Step 1. Many races list the participants names on a web site, or assign a race number. 3.) After registering, print out the Run for Wheels Information packet, detailing our program and the Pledge sheet, to keep track of donations. 4.) Upon completion of your race, all donations (checks only) and the donation tracking form should be mailed to: The Ghana Wisdom Foundation 4133 Tower Street, Philadelphia, PA 19127 5. Participants will be notified via e-mail and letters (and photos if available) once buses have been purchased. |
