Build A School Project: Wisdom Academy

Step 2: Construction of a school well

A well such as the one you see in the picture above (taken in the Volta Region of Ghana) will benefit Wisdom Academy in numerous ways and is the first necessary step in the construction of a new school for Wisdom Academy.

With the first step in the Build a School Project for Wisdom Academy complete (obtaining two plots of land for the new grounds), GWF and Wisdom Academy are ready for step two: the construction of a well for the school on these new grounds. Not only is the well physically necessary to move forward with the construction of the school (serving as a required source of water for pouring concrete and other tasks), there are numerous other benefits that the well is certain to bring about. Some of these are detailed below:

Increase in work and learning productivity: At times, students are required to walk long distances to the closest community well in order to fetch needed water for drinking or for school lunches. With a well on school grounds, students will no longer have to stop what they are doing to be burdened by this task and will have a limitless supply of safe water, allowing them to concentrate on what matters: their educations. The canteen, or cafeteria, will also benefit by providing food more quickly and efficiently with water on school grounds.

Improved health and sanitation as well as education regarding these issues: While it is hard to estimate the incidents of disease and sickness among students since visits to the doctor are infrequent when illnesses arise, it is plain to see this is a major problem. It is no secret that many of these health issues are related to lack of hygiene and unsanitary conditions, often relating to lack of proper water sources. UNICEF determined that one gram of feces can contain 10,000,000 viruses, 1,000,000 bacteria, 1,000 parasite cysts, and 100 parasite eggs. Multiply that by the amount that may fill the “bathrooms” on any given day and one might have some idea of the odds these children are working against. The construction of the well will serve as the foundation for providing better hygienic and sanitary bathroom facilities for the hundreds of students who attend Wisdom and the hundreds to come.

In addition, with a proper water source the well will provide on school grounds, sanitation and personal hygiene can be promoted and taught more efficiently. Although hygiene is taught in school, unfortunately, for students these lessons remain abstract ideas rather than tangible actions they may make a habit and in turn improve their daily health.

School sustainability: Our ultimate goal with each Partner School we obtain is to achieve a degree of sustainability so that long after we have helped build the school and have moved on to concentrate our efforts on other partners, the school can continue to maintain itself. The well will be just one way in which Wisdom Academy will be able to sustain itself. As in many developing countries like Ghana, water is a scarce commodity readily available only during certain seasons (and depending on location) and as such, this supply and demand is a potential source of income for those who have it. Wisdom Academy will be able to sell their water to the community generating a desperately needed supplement to the school's income and enabling sustainability.

Many people, mostly women and children, must walk very long distances in order to fetch water needed for daily living. At times, it is also the responsibility of older Wisdom students to take on this task when water is needed for the school.
